08/05/2008 London construction plans unveiled

Comprehensive construction plans for London's East End have been unveiled, it has emerged.

Providing 8,200 new homes, regions of the city - including Olympic Arc, Bromley-by-Bow, South Dagenham, Barking Town, Lea River Park, London Riverside Parklands and Canning Town - will also benefit from expanded transport links and commercial space.

Overall, £237 million is to be invested into the construction programme.

Planning minister Caroline Flint also reported that the next three years will see new town and community spaces be built.

Lorraine Baldry, chair of the London Thames Gateway Development Corporation, claimed that the scheme would also provide some 7,900 new jobs.

She said: "Our plan for the next three years is to drive forward schemes which will create a sense of place and belonging for local people and an environment that attracts new residents and people to settle."

In related news, it was revealed that 92 affordable homes are to be built on the site of the former Royal Naval Stores Depot in Exeter.
