07/05/2008 Southwark towers plan 'may prompt inquiry'
A proposed development involving two towers in Southwark may be subject to a public inquiry, it has been reported today.
Construction of the two towers is likely to be set back by the inquiry called for in a letter from the secretary of state sent to Southwark council's planning department.
The sustainability of the project and whether the towers meet with CABE guidance on tall buildings is being called into question, as is its ability to provide affordable housing and to conform with development plans of both the Greater London Authority and Southwark council.
Building.co.uk states that the project - comprising a 23-storey office block and a 42-storey residential tower - received initial approval in January.
If built as planned the towers will be across the road from the Beetham Tower - another project which has run into similar difficulties.
Should construction be given the go-ahead, the towers will boat 300 flats, offices and integrated open space, the publication has reported previously.
